The first big winter storm of the season has launched skiing around the West. With the snow comes the first avalanche death of the season up in British Columbia. The incident involved survey work, not skiing but, nonetheless, serves to remind us that even a shallow snowpack is subject to avalanche danger.
Here is a new avalanche awareness movie that sets a great tone, shows some awesome footage and delivers the basics of avalanche awareness through the words of snow profesionals. It is geared toward newcombers to backcountry skiing, but I recommend it regardless of your experience level. It features discussions with pro skiers and riders like Jeremy Jones, Cody Townsend and Elyse Saugstad, as well as ski guides and avalanche forecasters. Nice work HighFives Foundation
